The Rio Paralympic mascot is called Tom, named after the musician Tom Jobim. He represents the plants of Brazilian forests and can pull any object from his head of leaves.

The Rio Olympic mascot is called Vinicius and is named after musician Vinicius de Moraes. The Olympic mascot represents all Brazilian animals, primarily carrying design traits of mammals: the agility of cats, sway of monkeys and grace of birds. He can stretch his arms and legs as much as he wants.

The mascots in this post are satirical and appeared mostly in the Russian blogosphere. Although a few of them may ridicule the idea of the Olympic Games or its 2014 location in Sochi, the vast majority poke fun at the selection process of the official mascots, and the importance attributed to the mascot as a symbol.

You may be surprised to learn that Zoich won the online voting, and for a while was considered a serious contender to the Leopard, the Polar Bear, and the Hare.

Mikhail Galustyan is one of Russia’s best comedy actors. Here he resembles Misha the Bear, the mascot of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.
